The dredging of Lake Como has deepened the lake and restricted beds of spatterdock to small scattered areas like the cove just west of the Delaware Home and Hospital and shallow areas in the upper end of the lake. Microscopic algae often color the water green during the summer months, but do not impede fishing.
Low numbers of game fish are present in this lake, due in part to extremely high numbers of common carp and gizzard shad. The largemouth bass are few, but most are good size and average weights are very high. The Town of Smyrna owns and operates Lake Como; regulations are listed on a sign adjacent to the boat ramp. A boat permit, available from the Smyrna Police, is required for launching any motor-operated watercraft. Depending on water quality, the swimming area is usually open from Memorial Day to Labor Day for a small daily fee. It is unlawful for any person to use or have in possession any live fish as bait in Lake Como. From Wilmington, take RT 13 south to Smyrna. In Smyrna, from Main St. take Lake St. south to the lake beach.Picnic, toilets, lifeguards are there.
