Moores Lake is a 27-acre lake located in the center of the state, 2 miles south of Dover, DE. Carp and catfish used to dominate the catches of this pond, but largemouth bass, black crappie, bluegill, and white perch numbers have increased during recent years. Although growth of bass remains below average for Delaware ponds, over half of the adult bass population consists of 12 to 15 inch fish. The deep area immediately above the dam holds bass, crappie and often white perch during spring and fall when water temperatures are variable. Citations for largemouth bass, crappie and white perch have been issued in increasing numbers. However, numbers of carp and bullhead catfish are still high and anglers fishing with dough balls or worms will get plenty of action. Chain pickerel and yellow perch are present in low numbers. The pickerel prefer the weedy backwater areas in the upstream end of the pond, while yellow perch occur in open water. A fish ladder was installed to allow river herring access to freshwater spawning areas. A fish consumption advisory is in effect in this pond.River herring use the fish ladder to gain access to the pond during the spring months. It is unlawful for any person to fish within ten feet of the entrance or exit of a fish ladder or remove fish from any ladder between March 15 and May 30.
